ABOUT JHESSICA
Jhessica Freitas Almeida da Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was the only daughter of João and Cristina. During her childhood, Jhessica went to art school, and by the age of 12 she was already capable of painting pictures highly complex. With her father, Jhessica learned how to edit videos and also developed talent in diagramming picture albums.
Even though Jhessica was fluent in English, she learned the language on her own without taking any English classes. At the age of 13, she received the first place prize of a nationwide competition in English Cartooning in Brazil, having her cartoon story published by the most famous Brazilian cartoonist.
During her youth years, Jhessica worked as a substitute dance teacher and volunteered at a daycare for children with special needs.
When she turned 18, Jhessica enrolled into the Au Pair Exchange Program through the Cultural Care agency and moved to the USA. The program included studying while living with an American family and providing childcare. This exchange program was Jhessica’s dream.
“At first, as a father, I didn’t agree with the program because she was my only daughter and was only 18 years old, way too young and not completely fluent in English. She had never left her homecountry by then. Living in a new country far away from her home and living with a family we dind’t know was a huge deal. But because of her maturity and desire, Jhessica convinced us that she had to pursuie her dream. It happened so fast that, when we realized, our loved daughter was already boarding to the USA in Jan 3rd of 2010”
On April 1st of 2012, Jhessica Freitas Almeida da Silva was found dead in the host family's house where she lived in Great River, NY. The young woman was 20 years old at that time and was twenty-seven days away from her 21st birthday.
“On March 29th, Jhessica called us to tell that she had paid the College tuition with the money we had sent to her. Then, she called again letting us know that she had bought the books she needed with her own money. Unfortunately, that was our last conversation and contact. On Monday, April 2nd, my wife received a phone call from a Brazilian government agency around 8:30 am informing about our daughter’s death. At first, my wife thought it was a phone prank.”
A month before, in March of 2012, Jhessica’s parents visited their daughter in the USA.
“Those were very happy and joyful days with of our loved dauther. We did lots of things, spent time together, took pictures, went out, and made lots of plans for the future when she was going to return to Brazil. During our stay in the US, we heard lots of stories from her, including that she was starting to enjoy math and she was receiving good grades at school. She was also starting to learn French.”

Jhessica Freitas Almeida da Silva nasceu na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Filha única de João e Cristina, a jovem estudou pintura a óleo, e aos 12 anos já pintava quadros de alta complexidade. Com o pai, Jhessica aprendeu a editar vídeos, e também desenvolveu talento para diagramção de álbuns fotográficos.
Aos 13 anos, ela venceu um concurso nacional de histórias em quadrinhos em inglês, e teve seu trabalho publicado pelo famoso cartunista brasileiro Ziraldo Alves Pinto. Jhéssica dedicou-se ao aprendizado da língua inglesa sem a ajuda de cursos de línguas ou professores particulares.
Durante a sua adolescência, Jhessica trabalhou como professora substituta de dança e foi voluntária em uma creche cuidando de crianças especiais.
Ao completar 18 anos, Jhéssica ingressou no programa de Au Pair da agência Cultural Care e mudou-se pra os EUA. O programa de trabalho e estudo, criado pelo governo americano, proporcionou a jovem a realização de um sonho.
"A princípio eu como pai não concordei, pois minha única filha, só tinha 17 anos, era muito jovem, não dominava o idioma e nunca havia saído do país. Morar em lugar estranho e distante, com uma família que não conhecíamos era um desafio muito grande. Devido a sua maturidade ela nos convenceu de que realmente precisava ir em busca do seu sonho. Foi tão rápido, que quando percebemos, nossa amada filha já estava embarcando para os EUA em 3 de janeiro de 2010."
No dia 1º de abril de 2012, Jhessica Freitas Almeida da Silva foi encontrada morta, em seu quarto, na casa em que morava em Great River, NY. A jovem, então com 20 anos, completaria maioridade no dia 27 de abril de 2012.
"Na quinta-feira, dia 29 de março, Jhessica nos ligou avisando que já havia pago o semestre da faculdade antecipadamente com o dinheiro que enviamos. Depois ligou de novo avisando que já tinha comprado o livro que faltava, com o seu próprio dinheiro. Infelizmente, esse foi o nosso último contato. Na segunda-feira dia 2 de abril, minha esposa recebeu um telefonema de um orgão do governo de Brasília por volta das 08:30 da manhã informando do falecimento de nossa filha. A princípio, minha esposa pensou se tratar de um trote."
Um mês antes, em março de 2012, os pais de Jhessica visitaram a filha nos EUA.
"Foram dias muitos felizes e agradáveis ao lado de quem tanto amamos. Fizemos passeios, conversamos, tiramos fotos, nos abraçamos e fizemos muitos planos juntos, para a sua vinda ao Brasil. Durante nossa estadia nos EUA, ouvimos muitos relatos, inclusive, que estava passando a gostar de matemática, conseguindo tirar boas notas e que já estava aprendendo o idioma francês."
